Notes:

Values

What's important to someone in various contexts. If your values are met you're likely to be motivated and happy; if they're not you're less likely to be motivated and happy.

Ask your partner to remember a specific time that they felt 'in flow' in a particular context

Ask your partner "what's important to you?" and "what's important about that?" and maybe "what does that get you".

Press more than would be normally acceptable. When you've come to what appears to be a key value ask "And  what else is important.

When you have a number of key values list them and ask your client to put them in a priority order.

Towards the end of the exercise repeat back "So when you're in (whatever the context) what's important to you is (list in order). Watch and listen to your clients non verbal response - you've elicited their values when you get an obvious and congregant, positive non verbal response.

Note: Criteria are what has to happen for a value to be met.

Note: Use clean language - you're exploring your clients values - not your own.

Outcomes

How to think about what you want to in a way that makes it easier to get; or at least so that you know you don't really want it before you spend your resources on it.

There are four key concepts:

Positive - something you want as opposed to something you don't want

Under your control - If not chunk down until you find something that is under your control

Testable by your senses - You can see, hear, feel and preferably taste and smell what you want

Ecological - Its in the long term interests of yourself and those close to you

In addition both you and your client MUST be in a useful state.

And there are many different ways of approaching outcomes - for example

Positive

Is that something you want, as opposed to want to avoid?

Specific

When, where, with whom do you want it?

Evidence - Sensory based

How do you know when you've got it?

What will you see, feel, hear, taste and smell?

What will you see yourself doing differently as a result of achieving this?

Preserve the positive intention

(Don't throw the baby out with the bath water)

What will happen if you get this result?

What won't happen if you get it?

What will happen if you don't get it?

What won't happen if you don't get it?

Initiated and maintained by the individual

What's the first step you will take?

What resources do you have?

Ecology check

Offer your hand, palm up, to your partner and offer them their goal, right now, in the palm of your hand.

If you were offered this right now would you take it?

Note: When you ask what your client, sees, hears etc make sure they are using their senses eg by asking sensory questions

Note: Outcomes tend to focus the mind / body; there are some experiences where you just want to explore and enjoy - and not be too focused.
